Spam masquerading as Twitter e-mails lead to phishing, malware

E-mail inboxes are getting hit this week with spam campaigns that appear to be legitimate Twitter messages but which lead to malware and phishing sites, security firms warned on Wednesday.

If the link is clicked on a Trojan horse designed to target Windows will be downloaded and will install a backdoor on the machine that attackers can use to provide future instructions to the computer, as well as display pop up notices saying the computer is infected with malware and offering antivirus for sale, the firms said.

Best Antivirus for Gamers

What sells you on Internet Security? Is it the threat of losing your email, game keys, music, Facebook account or is it something even more sinister such as losing your identity, money … home? Well for me, it's all of the above, but most importantly my game keys which are secured in a dual encrypted file and store on multiple drives … one of those drives is on my person right now. (A bit extreme you say? Just wait till the zombie scripts come for your WoW key and we'll see how you react!) $10 says you'll chew through the walking corpses to get to your game discs … and then go get the shotgun.

So while we're bombarded from space by all the AV companies battling for our money and yes, Internet Security is something you should never trust to an ad-ware program, we should keep some things in mind. Who makes the software? What kind of history and track record do they have?

Eset Acquires Antispam maker Comdom

ESET, a global provider of security solutions, announces the acquisition of COMDOM Software ̵ a Slovakia-based software company acclaimed for antispam solutions. The latest acquisition underlines the company’s strategy of solidifying its position as a premiere developer of security software. By making this acquisition, ESET is increasing its capacity for developing advanced security solutions.

According to Miroslav Trnka, ESET CEO "ESET is a research and development-oriented company that is going to benefit from this merger by tapping into the potential of this manufacturer of advanced antispam solutions. Building on the team of skilled programmers and researchers, we envision introducing new activities, along with injecting new potential into the development of security software.“

Worm spreading via Yahoo Instant Messenger

A worm is spreading via Yahoo Instant Messenger Thursday that tricks people into downloading what they think is a photo from a friend but is instead malware that installs a backdoor on Windows systems and spreads to a victim's IM contacts.

The worm arrives via a message from a contact with the word "photo" or "photos" and a smiley face icon, along with a link to a Web site resembling a Facebook page, MySpace page, or some other page where photos might reside.

The worm drops software onto infected computers that can be used to turn them into zombies on a botnet, he said. But, once that back door is on the compromised system anything really is possible, he added.
